The startup is betting that the next generation of c-store technology won’t just report what’s happening; it will increasingly get the work done. Octane today announced the launch of its AI operating system built specifically for convenience-store operators, with an ambitious goal: help stores increasingly run themselves.
For decades, back-office software has helped operators collect data, run reports and inform of what is happening at their stores. Octane is being built for the next step: AI that can complete work. The platform connects the different parts of store operations and continuously watches what is happening across the business. It can identify issues, surface what matters and help execute everyday work across pricing, inventory, invoices, fuel, cash, labor, loss prevention and more, all while keeping operators in control.
“Convenience retail is at an inflection point after being relatively underserved by technology” said Narendra Vishnumolakala, co-founder of Octane. “Operators already have plenty of good software telling them what happened. Modern tech, especially Agentic AI, now give us the opportunity to fundamentally change how the work itself gets done.” That shift is already being tested in the field.
Octane is currently being piloted across 12 locations, running in parallel with existing systems as the company develops and validates its AI workflows alongside operators. Rather than requiring operators to rip and replace their technology stack, Octane works with existing systems and layers on intelligence and execution.
The company is now expanding its design partner group and selecting a small number of convenience-store operators to help shape the platform.“Every operator has plenty of data. The problem is someone still has to look at it, figure out what needs to happen, and then go do it,” said one Octane design partner. “The first time you see Octane take that work on, you think: why hasn’t our software always worked this way?”
