NATSO has named Max McBrayer Jr., former CEO of RaceTrac, as president and CEO effective July 1, according to a company announcement.

McBrayer replaces Darren Boyd Schulte, who in January 2025 became interim CEO of the national organization representing truck stops, travel centers and off-highway fuel retailers. Schulte will return to his previous position as vice president of membership.
The organization has been searching for a new leader since former CEO Lisa Mullings left at the end of 2024 after 20 years.
McBrayer will also serve as president of the NATSO Foundation, the organization’s research, outreach and public education arm.
“I am honored to assume the role of NATSO President and CEO at such a pivotal time for the industry and the association,” McBrayer said in the announcement. “I am committed to working with NATSO’s Board of Directors and the Leadership Team to execute a strategic framework that will drive sustainable growth while strengthening member relationships, positioning NATSO for the future.”
McBrayer left RaceTrac in early 2024 when the company named Natalie Morhous as its new CEO. He held a number of other roles at RaceTrac, including chief financial officer, chief supply officer and president of energy subsidiary Metroplex Energy. He has also served as president of The Ethanol Corporation, according to NATSO’s announcement.
“Max brings a deep understanding of the fuel retail and transportation energy industries and their customers to this leadership position,” Joe Zietlow, NATSO chairman of the board, said in the announcement. “The Board has full confidence that Max will build on his distinguished career to serve NATSO's members."
