Dive Brief:
- Casey’s General Stores has acquired all eight Maverik-owned convenience stores in Michigan, a company spokesperson confirmed to C-Store Dive.
- Casey’s bought seven former Kum & Go stores that Maverik had previously acquired and a former baked goods shop that the Utah retailer turned into a c-store earlier this summer. All eight stores, which Casey’s began operating last week, according to the spokesperson, are located in the greater Grand Rapids area.
- As Maverik has taken over Kum & Go, the retailer has quietly sold off over 30 locations in recent months for undisclosed reasons. Besides the stores in Michigan, Maverik offloaded 23 former Kum & Go stores across Iowa and South Dakota to Midwest retailer Mega Saver earlier this summer.

Maverik publicly revealed plans in February to rebrand Kum & Go’s seven convenience stores in Michigan, noting that the rebrands would be done by this summer. The Great Lakes State was one of Kum & Go’s smallest markets, as it only debuted there in January 2023.
As those rebrands took shape, Maverik officially opened its own first Michigan store in May. The site was formerly owned by local baked goods chain Arnie’s, according to Kent County records.
But Maverik’s presence in Michigan was short-lived. Casey’s expects to finish rebranding these locations to its own banner in the coming weeks, Luke Huff, a Kum & Go manager at one of the acquired sites near Grand Rapids, told C-Store Dive.
Maverik acquired Kum & Go in late 2023, and began rebranding stores in early 2024. In late 2024, Maverik confirmed its intent to rebrand all Kum & Go locations, and as of this summer had at least begun rebrands in all of Kum & Go’s markets besides Minnesota and North Dakota.
A spokesperson from Maverik did not respond by press time when asked to comment.
For Casey’s, the deal continues its expansion in Michigan, where the Midwest c-store giant has slowly expanded over the past few years. According to its website, it currently has a few stores in the southwest corner of the state, in areas such as New Buffalo and Bridgman. Earlier this month, Casey’s broke ground on a location in Hartford, according to a news release from the city.
