Mauricio Leyva hasn't even settled into his new role yet, but 7-Eleven’s incoming CEO is already facing significant challenges.
Parent company Seven & i didn't hire Leyva, an industry outsider with decades of beverage leadership experience, to maintain the status quo. It hired him to transform the business. The question now is whether Leyva can transform 7-Eleven quickly enough.
So let's break down Leyva's most pressing obstacles as he assumes leadership of 7-Eleven’s business in North America.
First and foremost, Leyva will have to prove that 7-Eleven is ready for its North American IPO. Seven & i is preparing to take the business public, but it's already delayed the IPO once. That raises the stakes for Leyva. He'll need to show investors that 7-Eleven can deliver stronger financial performance, execute its strategy and generate long-term growth.
Speaking of 7-Eleven’s strategy, Leyva will be tasked with delivering on the company's ambitious North Star transformation. This calls for remodeling more than 7,000 U.S. stores by 2030 while converting roughly 2,600 company-owned locations to the franchise model. These initiatives could improve performance and profitability, but they're also expensive, operationally complex and tough to execute on schedule.
Last but not least, Leyva will spearhead the goal to turn 7-Eleven into a true food destination. The retailer has invested heavily in fresh food, proprietary brands and restaurant-quality offerings in recent years. It also plans to nearly double the number of stores with a QSR by 2030. But changing customer perceptions is much tougher than adding new menu items. Leyva has to convince guests that 7-Eleven is a place to grab a quality meal, not just fuel and snacks.
So if Leyva can prove that the business is IPO-ready, execute the North Star plan and finally change how customers think about 7-Eleven's food offering, he'll be well on his way to delivering the transformation Seven & i is counting on him for. But if he can't, questions may emerge about whether he was the right person to lead the company into this next chapter.
