Dive Brief:
- Freedom Fuel Network, a chain of retail fuel sites in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, has opened its first location near Philadelphia, according to a video posted by the White House and as confirmed by a White House spokesperson.
- In the video, which the White House uploaded to its YouTube channel on July 7, an unidentified narrator says the new location in Dresher is selling gasoline for $3.47 per gallon — about 50 cents below Pennsylvania's statewide average, according to AAA data. A White House spokesperson said Freedom Fuel is reducing its margins to make fuel more affordable for consumers.
- The spokesperson emphasized that neither the White House nor the Trump Organization have any commercial or operational ties to the company.
Dive Insight:
According to Freedom Fuel’s website, which was shared by the White House spokesperson, the retailer has 20 locations in Pennsylvania and five in New Jersey. However, several aspects of the business remain unclear, including how many of these other 24 sites — if any — are open, as well as who owns or operates Freedom Fuel and how, and for how long it plans to sustain gasoline prices well below the market average.
The White House spokesperson declined to say who runs Freedom Fuel, and said it is a privately owned company that has not received funding from either the White House or the Trump family, despite the administration's promotion of the business and the video's repeated references to President Trump, including the statement that the $3.47-per-gallon price is in his honor.
The spokesperson also said no outside entity or individual is subsidizing the discounted fuel prices.
President Trump promoted the new business on Truth Social on July 1.
“As we approach America’s 250th Birthday, I am pleased to announce that a VERY smart Retailer, located throughout the Northeast, is stepping up, and wishing the People of Philadelphia a ‘Happy Birthday!’” Trump wrote. “On July 3rd, the Freedom Fuel Network will be lowering gas prices at 25 ‘FREEDOM FUEL’ Stations across the Greater Philadelphia Area. This Retailer is taking the lead, and others should follow.”
A review of the 25 locations listed on Freedom Fuel's website indicates the company is rebranding existing gas stations rather than building new sites. Five locations in the Philadelphia area were previously branded as Gas N Go, while six others — including the Dresher station featured in the White House video — previously operated under the Sunoco brand.
Representatives from Freedom Fuel did not respond by press time when asked to comment.
