BP has appointed Ian Tyler as chair of the company, effective immediately, according to a Wednesday announcement.
Tyler joined BP’s board as a non-executive director in April 2025 and was appointed interim chair in May after the oil giant ousted its former Chair and Director Albert Manifold over concerns related to his oversight and conduct.
BP named Tyler the permanent replacement to Manifold after conducting an extensive search process that included both internal and external candidates, the company said.
“Ian brings significant experience providing challenge and support to executive teams, while maintaining strong governance and oversight on behalf of shareholders,” Amanda Blanc, BP’s senior independent director, said in the announcement. “These qualities have been evident during his time as Interim Chair, where he has secured the confidence of the board and executive management through his considered leadership, judgement and integrity."
Tyler has worked alongside more than 15 chief executives during his non-executive career with both listed and private companies across oil and gas, natural resources and engineering businesses, according to the announcement.
He is currently chair of building materials company Grafton Group and senior independent director of mining company Anglo American. He previously chaired British oil and gas company Cairn Energy and was a non-executive director at aerospace firm BAE Systems.
“I will lead the board’s evolution, ensuring we have the depth, experience and capabilities needed to support the company's strategic priorities and long-term value creation,” Tyler said in the announcement.
Tyler takes the helm of BP’s board as the company continues a years-long portfolio review that has reshaped its U.S. convenience retail network through team restructurings and c-store divestitures. Most recently, CEO Meg O’Neil said BP plans to improve the financial performance of its TravelCenters of America travel stop business, though did not provide details on how the energy company plans to achieve that goal.
