M&A activity in the c-store industry has been busy for years, and that probably won’t slow down any time soon as small players exit the industry and larger players look to build scale and move into new markets.
There have been a few notable large-scale deals. Couche-Tard closed its purchase of GetGo Cafe + Market last summer after divesting 35 stories to appease the Securities and Exchange Commission. Those stores were picked up by Majors Management, which will introduce its MAPCO brand to three new states.
Additionally, energy firm Sunoco has agreed to buy Parkland Corp, including all its retail sites in the U.S.,Canada and the Caribbean.
Many smaller players are exiting the industry as pressures mount and bigger competitors look to expand. Pops Mart selling its stores, Brew Oil picking up Danlee Corp’s stores and The Kent Companies buying B&B Petroleum are just three examples.
