Dive Brief:
- Buc-ee’s has submitted a request to rezone a roughly 80-acre site in Indiana for what would be its first travel center in the state, according to paperwork filed with the city of Greenwood.
- The proposed location is along Interstate 65 in Greenwood, about 15 miles south of downtown Indianapolis.
- With the pending expansion into Indiana, Texas-based Buc-ee’s will be either operating or working on stores in 22 states.
Dive Insight:
Buc-ee’s plans to open a 74,000-square-foot store that also features EV chargers and 120 fueling positions, according to the filing. The project would also involve public street improvements and walking trails that would connect the city’s existing trail system to where the proposed store would be built.
The retailer is asking Greenwood to rezone the land from agricultural and residential to the city’s planned unit development district.
Mapping Buc-ee's store footprint beyond Texas
The Buc-ee’s rezoning request was on the Greenwood Plan Commission’s agenda for June 22, but the commission granted a requested continuation until July 13, according to the commission’s website.
If approved, Indiana would become home to one of Buc-ee’s super-sized c-stores, which are well known for their barbecue, proprietary snacks, clean bathrooms and shelves of merchandise with the company logo on it.
The Hoosier State has been a hotbed for c-store expansion in recent years. Wawa and QuikTrip both opened their first stores in Indiana in 2025 less than a mile apart from each other. Wally’s plans to debut in Indiana later this month, and Sheetz recently announced plans for 100 stores in the state over the next decade.
Buc-ee’s expansion plans have been in full swing over the past couple months. Beyond the rezoning request in Indiana, the retailer has also debuted in Arizona, broken ground on its first North Carolina store and received important approvals in Ohio and Virginia. It joins other convenience retailers like QuikTrip, Sheetz, Wawa and Dash In that are pushing their brands into new states.
