Dive Brief:
- Costco is building a standalone gas station in Honolulu, Hawai’i, a spokesperson from private education system Kamehameha Schools, which owns the project, confirmed to C-Store Dive.
- The gas station will be located on a parcel between Colburn Street and Dillingham Boulevard in a community called Kapālama Kai. Construction officially began in October 2025 and the full development is expected to be complete in 2027, according to the project’s website.
- This comes less than a year after Costco revealed plans to open its first standalone gas station in 2026 in Mission Viejo, California, suggesting the wholesale giant is looking to scale this new approach to its fuel business.
Dive Insight:
Costco’s first standalone gas station in Hawai’i will be part of a broader project called ʻŌlauniu at Kapālama Kai, in which Kamehameha Schools is redeveloping the area with new retail stores, dining options, gathering areas and office space. The entire project encompasses four existing buildings across nine acres, making up over 174,000 square feet of space. It’s expected to cost over $13.5 million, according to building documents from the Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting.
The Costco gas station is expected to have 20 fueling islands with 40 gas pumps, according to a report from local station KITV News. It is also about a mile from a traditional Costco Wholesale store that includes a Costco gas station.
Kamehameha Schools’ spokesperson said that the new Costco gas station will serve as a “hub of connectivity by integrating efficient traffic design and improved circulation."
"This new station expands Costco’s services, giving those living, working in and visiting Kapālama Kai a convenient, affordable option to fuel their vehicles in addition to the Iwilei location,” the spokesperson added.
Representatives from Costco did not respond by press time when asked to comment.
Although Costco has not publicly commented on the development of standalone gas stations, fuel is increasingly becoming a priority at the company’s popular warehouse stores. The company operated 747 gas stations globally at the end of fiscal 2025 — up from 719 after 2024 — which represented 10% of its total net sales for the year, according to its annual report.
