Dive Brief:
- Jacksons Food Stores has launched a cardless fleet payments system across its network of more than 340 convenience stores, according to a Wednesday announcement.
- The system, from retail payment network Piston, lets commercial drivers at Jacksons authorize and pay for fuel through secure mobile authorization, completely replacing a physical card.
- This upgrade comes just a few months after Jacksons revamped its loyalty platform, continuing a busy stretch on the technology front for the Idaho-based retailer.
Dive Insight:
Jacksons’ integration with Piston’s payment system creates a new opportunity for the company to grow commercial fuel purchases as gasoline sales remain a bright spot for convenience retailers amid mounting pressure on in-store transactions.
"Commercial fueling is an important part of our business, and the way fleets pay is changing," said Cory Jackson, president of Jacksons Food Stores, in the announcement. "Working with Piston helps us keep pace with that shift and makes Jacksons a practical stop for fleets using modern payment technology."
Each transaction through Piston’s system is tied to a specific driver and vehicle, giving fleet owners real-time visibility into their fuel spending. The system also connects to Jacksons’ point of sale, which helps prevent fraud, according to the announcement.
“Jacksons has a strong presence across the West, and bringing hundreds of new locations onto Piston at once gives fleet operators more flexibility when planning routes,” said Vikram Sekhon, co-founder and CEO of Piston. “It also connects Jacksons directly with the commercial fuel demand on our network.”
Jacksons’ latest technology upgrade also coincides with ExtraMile Convenience Stores, the joint venture it owns with Chevron, adding third-party delivery options at 1,200 locations across 12 states.
