Dive Insight:
With average gas prices in the U.S. up by more than $1 per gallon year over year, according to AAA data, the ability to pair Walmart’s 10-cent discount with Club Citgo’s offers could attract more drivers to those locations.
Club Citgo discounts start at 3 cents per gallon but can be higher based on the day of the week, how often guests fuel up and how they pay, among other variables.
Customers can activate the Citgo benefit in the Walmart mobile app under the “gas savings” section and either create or link to a Club Citgo account. At participating Citgo-branded gas stations, guests enter their phone number into the pump, or the in-store pin pad if they’re paying in cash. The discounts are then applied to the transaction.
“Expanding our Gas Savings benefit by adding CITGO stations gives members even more places to save, with convenient locations that fit into their rhythm of daily life,” said Deepak Maini, senior vice president and general manager for Walmart+, in the announcement.
Walmart+ members can already receive the discount at participating Murphy USA, Walmart, Exxon and Mobil locations, as well as get member pricing at Sam’s Club. Members can find participating locations in the Walmart app. Walmart says that members who use the fuel savings at least weekly have saved over $100 last year on average.
